A little coral home for tiny shrimp to play peekaboo. Maybe some eels, too.
This piece began as a wheel-thrown moon vase, which I then smacked (yes, actually smacked) and coaxed into a botanical, alien-like form. Its lustrous green and copper sheen comes from raku firing: the ceramic is pulled from the kiln red-hot, then sealed in a metal can with burning sawdust. The smoke and flame starve the glaze of oxygen, and the results are impossible to predict, so no two pieces are ever alike.
Raku remains porous, so the glaze will keep transforming over time as it reacts to oxygen and humidity in the air. This piece will continue to change, just like a living reef.
